Recorded first take in Ableton Live 8 after coming home to chill with some good old (and wild trancers I might obligatorily add . . ) after I stopped by the Above&Beyond show with them last week. Oh Oceanlab, waves of nostalgia and illicit chez (queso . . . cheese … … trance leads and sexy female vocal classic touch!) poured into my being and the essence inspired me to go home and just play and record. [[ Note: Inspired action to mix/DJ, and in no way meant from a musical perspective of the term...
]]
Any feedback would be greatly welcome, I feel I’m finally getting better at this shindig and not in the “hooray I fucked up less tonight” way or equally as annoying technological disaster nights I felt one too many times initially after switching to Ableton for DJing last year.

I will try hard in the next couple of days to post SXSW flyers for some of the coolest stuff I’m going to, including both local and out of town talent alike, though it will be somewhat limited as posting everything I’ve got on the front and backburners for my pending SXSW “schedule” to attend etc. would be arguably more hopeless than deluding myself into thinking I’ll actually follow said schedule to any reasonable degree. But hey, in the meantime, I have a very special treat for you. A mix that has been sitting around for weeks unfinished, contemplating what had to be done for me to be happy enough to put it out to the wonderful public. In a week of many (12+ at least) long hours back with Ableton, my MIDI controllers, and a few healthy meals to keep me going I was able to refine the track selection to its now final form, listed below. The mix finally got fully mixed and EQ’ed late last night and I can honestly say this is a mix I’m damn proud of despite my initial doubts and is so solid that this is the mix that will be passed out at SXSW to promote my new joint-venture promotions crew/record label antipraxis (as well as my own solo work I do suppose). But hey, if you’re as impatient as me you don’t have to wait to run into one of the antipraxis crew at South-By to get the mix, you can download it right below in all its high-quality glory, fresh off the cut.

This mix has been in the works for far too long now as I mentioned, but ultimately the work paid off with a truly solid mix I feel tells a deep story/or maybe just a vignette (great track by Seva K by the way… “Vignette”) as well as can deliver your body the power to jack and groove both in the club and in the bedroom. Oh ya, don’t be too thrown off in the beginning because the mix starts off with two very disco-y tracks (which I suppose will be received differently depending on who you are…), but quickly evolves into something else altogether and without digging too much technically could be described with tags like house, techno, deep, and progressive at times past the disco teaser(s). She then steams along to the powerful climax a little past the halfway point, and finally finds its way to a place far away from where it started, precisely with Seva K’s track “Far Away.” I hope you enjoy this mix as much as even I do even despite how many times I must have heard the tracks within it and portions or all of the mix by now.
White walls.

Rey Aguilar is a personal friend of Solid State co-host Andres Aguirre and a solid upcoming producer as well as a fantastic DJ with a residency down in his current hometown of McAllen, Texas. Rey is one half of the production/DJ duo Retrovox, based right here in Texas, in the state’s deepest region! Rey has spun most recently (AFAIK) in Austin with Andres Aguirre at Terrace 69 (above/part of the Speakeasy lounge off Congress) and guarantees a solid night of dancing and audacious good times with DJ sets that bridge gaps and stand out among a scene mixed with junk and jewels all the same. I’ve linked two original Retrovox productions for now as well as Rey’s most recent personal mixed set he has released below for your personal listening and body-moving enjoyment.

I figured I’d make a quick introduction to Solid State’s new co-host for 2009, Andres Aguirre. Andres is a second-year McAllen transplant whose DJjng and production experience stretch years back before Solid State (or even counterlogic Radio for that matter) were born. Andres’ experience mixing and his general immersion in the world of techno/house/etc. promise to provide a program even more solid than before. I dare to think there is possibly any better candidate within the whole student body, much less Austin altogether to join up to bring the absolute deepest and grooviest sounds from around the world alongside counterlogic. As a special bonus, I have posted a link below to Andres’ most recent mix (just posted this Sunday). Tune in Friday, January 30, 2009 from 11PM-1AM on KVRX-Austin 91.7 FM or at kvrx.org to catch Andres in the mix for the first time with counterlogic (that includes a full hour mixed through with Andres, our newest picks for deep and fresh tracks, and some of counterlogic’s interview with The Juan MacLean).

Here’s a logo/banner I threw together for now until I decide on anything else to possibly represent Solid State. Anyways, I just made it so I’d have some kind of graphic to go along with posting Solid State’s first 2009 show recording. Despite a few glitches and the absence of Solid State’s new co-host until show two, 2009’s first program went pretty well. A link to the recording is just below (or click on the Solid State logo I made… right-click, save-as). This episode of the program should be up in the steaming/flash player of the sidebar very soon (hopefully with the player’s playlist repaired by then too).

Local producer/teacher/blogger/author Francis Preve headlines at the Firehouse Lounge on Tuesday night. This is definitely the first local set of 2009 not to miss in my books. Preve spins from 12-2 AM. No cover, no excuses.

Francis Preve @ Firehouse Lounge (Tues. 01/27/09)
January 22, 2009 – 7:36 am
To reiterate with details instead of names, the night kicks off with local DJ/tastemaker of Learning Secrets infamy just one week before their coming huge 5th birthday bash. Orth will be trailed by a Californian ‘-lectro’ duo performing. But all this is only setup because DFA is in the house, yes the DFA. And it will be self-titled band frontman/solo producer Juan MacLean spinnin’ the house for us all until Beauty Bar says “lights out hipsters! shoo!” and we have to scamper off to our respective after-hipster parties complaining about how “pretentious all the people at that place always are, geez!” Juan has made the time off from his busy tour promoting his March LP #2 release to come kick it with us down in the heart of Texas. Here’s the flier for the gig:

Juan MacLean @ Beauty Bar Austin (01-22-09)
Did I mention its free? Just bring an ID and make sure you follow the instructions in the flier above and RSVP at http://www.scion.com/houseparty, I mentioned like a DFA guy is, like, the headliner for this right? Did I mention I’ll be snagging interview-age? Expect some of my talks with the talent up here after the show and some on my show Solid State tomorrow night when it runs its first time of the 2009 spring semester for some really insider get-dowwwn. C’yall there.
December 22, 2008 – 5:39 pm
I present to you the first version of my very own set, recorded at home today and broadcast live to a few friends simultaneously. Anyways, this set is one I’ve been kinda piecing together for a while but finally got around to recording and tweaking since school is out for the moment and the shackles on my mind have been freed for the moment for me to progress clearly with my mixes and production work. Expect more soon.

UPDATE [01/15/09]: The link just above has been updated to reflect the most recent revision of this mix. Fixed some warping errors, and most prominently, moved a couple tracks around and replaced the Decalicious and Booka Shade tracks with two tracks I feel fit much better with the flow of the mix and transition much more smoothly, I’m pretty happy with this mix now, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed crafting it. The playlist above has been updated to reflect this final revision.
